Located in Punta Gorda, Florida, Peace River Wildlife Center is a bird and wildlife sanctuary. Funded by pritave donations, for 30 years its mostly volunteer staff has been welcoming injured and orphaned animals for treatment and rehabilitation and then returning them to the wild. The Center also works to educate the public on ways to successfully co-exist with wildlife.
Despite the fact that veterenarians helping the animals are also volunteering their time, the expenses associated with treating 1,500 animals a year add up to $200,000 a year have not been matched up by sufficient donations, and there is a threat that the rehabilitation center might not be able to continue its operations.
Animals in the photos are those whose conditions would not allow them to survive in their natural habitat. However, in captivity and with care they live long lives and even successfully breed.
